The Government is forcing through plans to turn the former Esperance Hospital into a 125-bed asylum accommodation centre—without proper consultation and against the wishes of our community. This plan is completely wrong for Eastbourne, and we must stop it.
• The Wrong Location – The site is surrounded by elderly and vulnerable residents and sits in the heart of Eastbourne’s tourism and hospitality sector. It is wholly unsuitable for large-scale asylum accommodation.
• A Threat to Our Economy – Eastbourne relies on tourism and small businesses, both of which are already struggling. This plan risks damaging our town’s reputation and future prosperity.
• A Housing Crisis Ignored – We have one of the worst housing shortages in the South East. This site should be used to provide homes for local families, not a government-imposed asylum centre.
• Serious Safety Concerns – Sussex Police have raised strong objections on public safety grounds. The government is pressing ahead regardless.
Our town deserves better. We call on the government to scrap this ill-conceived plan and for the local council to take all available legal action to block it.
